On 11 February 1869, the Englishman Henry Russell, accompanied by the Passet brothers, became the first to reach the summit of the Vignemale (3,298 m) – the highest peak in the French Pyrenees – during the winter. This winter ascent is considered one of the earliest known winter ascents in Europe.
